Antispyware Trouble & Update Glitch

I recently used Paretologic XoftSpy Antispyware to scan my PC for malicious files. It found a Trojan horse named CWS Combo that Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, and Norton AntiVirus didn’t detect. Unfortunately, I have to pay for the full version of XoftSpy 4.15 to remove the Trojan. Do you think this is legitimate or just a ploy from XoftSpy’s creators to get me to buy the full version?

The spyware problem has created a huge demand for antispyware, and some vendors looking to cash in on that demand don’t really care if they cause more problems than they solve. Eric L. Hayes maintains a list of rogue antispyware at Spyware Warrior. The applications on his list sometimes use several names, are sometimes marketed using deceptive advertising, and sometimes return false positives to pressure users into buying them. Generally, there is a huge range of Anti-Spyware software available from the net. Many are even free, but are perhaps not as effective as the ones which come with a small price. However, as a consumer, you have the choice, and I suggest you do your research before going out and actually spending money on one.

Recently, I upgraded my copy of Internet Explorer. No big deal, right? Well, I thought it was an upgrade. In actuality it turned out to be a product masking as an upgrade called Intelligent Explorer and when it downloaded to my machine, it started a nightmarish journey that taught me a wealth about what one wrong click can unleash on your computer.

I did some quick research via Google and found messages screaming for help in the BullGuard and Spywareinfo forum from people trying to get it off their machine. In this article, I am going to use Internet Explorer to point out the Internet Explorer plugin nightmare and what you'll need to do to protect yourself.

Intelligent Explorer is a toolbar that moves in and takes over your browser. It is extremely hard to get rid of, and beyond that, it's just plain annoying. Here's is just one sample of a person calling for help:

""Hey I'm having issues with something called Internet explorer toolbar - Intelligent explorer. I can't find a way to remove it from my comp and I really don't want to reinstall windows. I've used spybot, ad-ware, and cw shredder but nothing seems to work."

What makes Intelligent Explorer so destructive is that it allows other software add-ons to download to you computer. And, even more insulting to your intelligence is that in their license agreement it states that they have the right to do it.

"You grant to us the right, exercisable by us until you uninstall the Software or this agreement is otherwise terminated, to provide to you the Service of downloading and causing to be displayed advertising material on your computer, through "pop-up" or other display while you use your browser. You acknowledge and agree that installation of the Software may automatically modify toolbars and other settings of your browser. By installing the Software, you agree to such modifications."

The company that pushes this parasitic software is an obfuscated firm incorporated in the tiny country of Belize outside of most jurisdictions and immune from legal actions.

The pop-ups generated by this plugin run the gamut from annoying to pornographic. It can create a new homepage, generate an endless loop of popup ads, reappear after removal and cause endless hours of frustration.

Thank God for Paretologic XoftSpy. After two scans, it finally got rid of it, and it only cost me $40. Freeware is available, but at the level of frustration I was at, I went for a guaranteed product. At least, if it didn't work, I could return it and get my money back. Other good eliminators include Spyware Eliminator, Spyware COP and Spybot Search and Destroy.

I have subsequently switched browsers, recognizing that Internet Explorer just has too many holes in its current security. Mozilla Firefox has become my browser of choice. It comes with superior security features and it's much easier to get rid of plug-ins that prove harassing. I have only gone over one plug-in problem I encountered when using IE. XoftSpy took care of others as well, but I got a much better browser and fewer problems when I made the switch to Mozilla Firefox.

All currenttly present on the market antispyware applications can be configured to scan on schedule and download updated spyware definitions automatically. They all have the option to recover suspected spyware from quarantine, or to mark specific programs as trusted so they'll be immune to future scans. In addition to scanning the system and removing spyware, they all at least attempt to prevent it from installing in the first place. Many will alert you when a program makes a suspicious system change like hijacking your home page or configuring itself to launch at startup. Effective spyware protection is just one element of a safe computing experience, and we'd very much like to see excellent antispyware as part of an excellent security suite. But for now, none of the suites has an antispyware module that protects well enough. So our recommendation is unchanged: Get a security suite, get a separate antispyware app, and keep them running and up to date.

Find out who in your company is gathering private information, and who all has access to it, says Mark Merkow, author of "The E-Privacy Imperative: Protect Your Customers' Internet Privacy and Ensure Your Company's Survival in the Electronic Age." "Who controls it and is it shared or disclosed to third parties in any way?"

2. Determine upfront what statutes may apply. What you put into your privacy policy may not be exclusively up to you. As the public's concern over privacy has grown, so have the number of formal government regulations dictating what elements certain privacy policies have to contain. For instance, US businesses which deal in health care, likely are required to comply with The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). Likewise, for those involved in financial matters, the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act may mandate certain financial privacy requirements.

"Given the growing concern about privacy, there are more and more statutory requirements that define what certain privacy policies have to have in them," says David Simon, founder and president of WeComply, a Mt. Kisco, N.Y., company that offers employee training on privacy issues.

3. Give your customer specifics on how you will use their information. Tackle those issues that you're not obligated to mention " but are in your best interest to raise. As Harold Krent, dean and professor at the Chicago-Kent College of Law puts it, "There's certain information that it's strategically important to relay." Although privacy policies will differ significantly from one business to the next, here's a brief checklist of issues you should take into consideration:

" Telling customers and clients as precisely as possible what sort of personal information you gather and why.

" Whether you require Social Security or SIN numbers and why.

" Why and how you will use information from events and programs, such as surveys, contests, special offers and referrals.

" How information collected is stored, both online and off.

" If, how and why the information is shared.

" Offering customers the choice of "opting out" of certain programs.

" Why and how you will use information specific to customers' activity on your companys Web site.

" How customers may access whatever personal data you may have about them.

4. Get an attorney or privacy specialist, if necessary, to draft or review your policy. Once you have a sense of what you want to include " and what you legally must include " in a privacy policy, start putting something on paper. You can try drawing up a privacy policy yourself " if you opt for this, it's prudent to have an attorney or an expert on privacy matters review it for potential holes. Likewise, you can hand off the task to a lawyer or privacy specialist. Additionally, don't forget the Internet for guidance on policy matters. For instance, TRUSTe and the Better Business Bureau offer useful guidelines of what sort of content you may wish to consider for your privacy policy.

5. Don't overlook employees in your privacy policy. For many of them, privacy policies are exclusive to clients and customers. But it may be just as critical to have written parameters on how you use personal information about your employees. BlackBerry spyware defeated by XoftSpy Antispyware

Research in Motion's (RIM) BlackBerry which is popular with corporate users due to its secure management of mobile e-mail is vulnerable to 'legal' spyware that has been classified as a Trojan by several security vendors.

RIM's BlackBerry has won significant market share in the corporate sector due to a perception that it is impervious to security attacks.

But an updated version of the FlexiSPY application, considered a security threat by most IT security vendors, enables a remote attacker to tap into phone calls and e-mails sent to and from a Blackberry-enabled device.

"This is the first [Trojan] for a BlackBerry we have ever seen," said Patrik Runald, senior security specialist with ParetoLogic Anti-spyware.

Marketed as a spyware device for BlackBerry phones, the FlexiSPY application by Bangkok-based manufacturer Vervata is sold on the premise that it can "spill BlackBerry secrets."

Internet is flooded with all sorts of malware. Spyware is considered by many experts to be the worst kind as it is designed to intercept or take partial control of your machine, without your consent and it practically invades your privacy. Spyware software falls into three categories: the so called badware, malicious and the popup ads launchers.

Spyware simply tracks the websites the user is visiting and then sends the information to an advertising agency (it is an easy way for advertisers to make their marketing research). The popup ads launchers simply annoy you with activating all types of banners on your screen. Malicious spyware is the worst because it can monitor the activity on your computer and send to a third party whatever you type on your keyboard (passwords, credit card numbers, etc.).

Using XoftSpy SE is a piece of cake as the interface is simple and every type of user can handle it. From newbies to more advanced computer users, this privacy protection tool will provide easy access to the functions and options.

The options are arranged vertically in the left side of the application window. The first button is the Start Scan. Pressing it will launch the scan of your computer. I advise using it after you have made the settings of the software.

Next in line are the Backup and Ignore List buttons featured in XoftSpy SE. The names of the options say it all. The Scan results will display the files that the software has detected as being some sort of malware. Right-clicking them will open a context menu that allows the user to send files considered as non-threat to the ignore list.

You will be glad to learn that the software includes the scheduling feature. Thus you do not have to remember (or be reminded) all the time to scan your machine for malware. Schedule the task (weekly, monthly, once, at system startup, at logon or when the system is idle) and the start time. If you have scheduled the task weekly or monthly, you have to select the day of the week or month you want the scheduling to be performed.

At the time of the review the software provided protection against over 95,000 definitions. After the application has finished the scan, the user can access a usage report in order to see the time and date of the last scan, the number of items removed or the total number of scans and items in the ignore list.

The number of definitions XoftSpy SE stores in its database is impressive and the software is easy to use and arouses no problem.

The user can find out information about the scanned objects. Clicking this option will take you to the software's website and you will learn about the object's threat level and what it does.

The application does not include archive scanning or at least it does not display them when browsing for folders.

The buttons in the left side of the application window are too sandwiched in between, although the interface allows for a more airy arrangement.

I know that the software was pretty controversial at the beginning, but the software is legit now. It found a total number of more than 100 malware on my computer from only two parasites and a number of cookies.

It seemed to me to have done a pretty good job with scanning, but I am a little suspicious about removing the objects found on my computer. Unfortunately, the trial version only scans the comp and it does not remove the malware. So it gives you a clear picture of how deeply your computer is infected, but to clean it you need to have a subscription license for XoftSpy SE.

In this article author tells about his experience with Xoftspy and other popular antispyware solutions available on the market.

Who would think I was capable of such revengeful thoughts about the parties responsible for inflicting my poor computer with spyware? Well, after the trauma of having gone through such an experience for the first time, I was sorely tempted by the occult section of curses and witchcraft at my local bookstore. Growl!

Basically, I am a normal person using a home computer to perform simple normal tasks such as word processing, writing emails, internet banking, and surfing the Internet for useful information. Ok, I also have a weakness for looking for bargains on good old eBay (sheepish grin) and Paypal is quite a handy option for easy purchasing.

Problem:

Great dismay and panic hit when my pc started popping up strange windows or messages. With my limited IT knowledge, I ran a Norton virus scan which obviously revealed a number of problems. But the Symantec removal tool did not remove the spyware and I could not even log onto a couple of password protected sites. My beloved pc was infected with some malware or adware or trojan, among which, I believe was WinFixer and a Trojan Vundo. I did not know how to get rid of Vundo or how to remove WinFixer. (Or perhaps they were the one and same thing?). But at that point, I did not know any better, so began the laborious task of searching for information on how to get rid of the spyware.

Research:

WinFixer, on the other hand, has siblings as it is identical to WinAntiVirus and ErrorSafe. And these programs all claim to repair problems within your computer system. By installing the program on your computer, you will likely end up receiving false information about your computer. Naturally, this will confuse you into believing your PC is infected with viruses, spyware and/or other forms of malware.

From my search, I found out that the Trojan Vundo is a trojan horse that causes popups advertising rogue antispyware programs. For example, the program called Sysprotect is advertised in many of the popup windows as seen from the screenshot below. Vundo infects a computer by creating a DLL file in the Windows system directory and writes registry entries causing Windows to inject the file into winlogon.exe.

The popups and forced downloads apparently mirror "marketing" strategies of many spyware programs. And at times, infected computers will reduce in their level of speed and performance. Well, this all explained what was probably happening to my pc, and I knew I had to figure out how to get rid of WinFixer and Vundo before they drove me mad.

Research and solution:

My initial Norton antivirus scan found but was not able to delete Vundo, even after rebooting. The Symantec removal tool did not help at all. I had disconnected from the Internet, disabled system restore, and ran the removal tool, regularly and in safe mode. After numerous startups, varying with safe mode, and disabling antivirus, I even tried to figure out how to remove Vundo manually without messing with the registry, etc. Please note that some people had success with the Symantec removal tools, and some others, like me, did not. Apart from the Trojan Vundo, I was getting quite frustrated at not being able to remove WinFixer for the many windows continually popping up started to slow my computer down, and even freeze it at times.

So I first tried Xoftspy, which was the fastest when scanning my computer. I was pleased to have fewer pop ups, was able to remove WinFixer, and ended with a much faster internet connection.

Then with my next program, Spy Sweeper, I ran it twice and then did a full system scan. Lo and behold, Vundo was gone, no more popups and adware annoyances. I guess this might not work for everyone but it is worth a shot to download Spy Sweeper.

Being still paranoid about the health of my pc, I finally ran the the free two-week trial version of CounterSpy, for extra assurance. Now I was quite impressed as it also included a scheduler, secure file shredder, and a history cleaner that made it simple to set up weekly scans. And there are frequent definition file updates for CounterSpy's publisher. The company seems to run a well-staffed spyware research department. After a scan, CounterSpy can delete, quarantine, or remove spyware. I was advised not to install Microsoft AntiSpyware alongside older versions of CounterSpy (version 1.5 and below). And it is recommended to get CounterSpy to check for online updates of definitions and program files manually.

In my initial panic, I reacted by downloading some recommended antispyware programs, namely CounterSpy by Sunbelt Software, XoftSpy by ParetoLogic and Spy Sweeper by Webroot Software Inc. I came to my senses by the third program and stopped myself from paying for another popular program, Spyware Doctor. But hey, all these programs did receive pretty good reviews from the experts at PCWorld, PCMag, CNet, Tucows and AdwareReport. So at the time, I did not feel that I had gone too much overboard ;)

Now, there are many sites listing all sorts of free and paid antispyware programs with a variety of reviews and user opinions on how to remove WinFixer and how to get rid of Vundo. Many of the commercial antispyware program homepages also list very detailed features of their products plus the latest research findings about current spyware threats.

Anyway, an opinion and recommendation I had read when researching for the reliable antispyware programs made heaps sense in that software you pay for is more likely to offer benefits over freeware, i.e., better support, more frequent updates and better pro-active protection measures. One just has to be careful when selecting the programs. According to the comments in the forums and review articles I had read, many recommend using at least two programs to be able to catch the latest spyware that either program might miss (that was when I stopped myself from my downloading frenzy). I have learnt much more about my pc now and wish to share and perhaps amuse you my muddled but finally effective measures to cleaning up my pc and removing the spyware.

Conclusion:

To sum it all, XoftSpy was able to delete WinFixer as the program was able to uninstall WinFixer within fifteen minutes requiring a couple of restarts. As for Spy Sweeper, it managed to remove Vundo with ease. And I have no doubt that CounterSpy has done a great job of keeping my pc free of spyware. I cannot say that I have taken the best approach to solving my problems, but my pc is now running faster than ever and I have been free of WinFixer and Vundo ever since. I just have to remember to be more careful and scan my pc regularly.

One thing is for sure, there are many reliable and popular antispyware programs out there, and many helpful forum chat folk who can lend a hand with plenty of technical advice. You just have to sort out what advice and which steps to take by increasing your own awareness and understanding of your pc and the nasty world of spyware lurking around these days.

I was wating time at the dinner at my in-laws' house in Virginia, last day, in part so I could get a head start on the traffic heading up to Austin for the ISPCON keynote I inspected this evening. After I sat down at my father-in-law's PCto check my favorite websites, a program called XoftSpy SE interrupted what I was doing to tell me it had detected a new spyware threat on the machine.

My father-in-law said that a few days earlier he'd received a pop-up alert that a whole bunch of nasty spyware programs were lurking on his computer, and that XoftSpy SE was just the trick to clean up his machine.

Paretologic’s SE Xoftspy is like Noadware’s offering, in that you can scan to see what you have on your system, but you can’t remove it. And when you find that there are 1,500 things on your PC, you certainly feel like reaching for the credit card so you can pay to remove them.

Scanning is very quick and the 1,500 items found included every cookie and file that every piece of spyware installs on your PC. After rebooting, we were assured there were only seven left to remove, which were duly killed by another scan and clean, and our home page was reset to the value we’d entered into SE Xoftspy. However, we still had unwanted pop-ups affecting our browsing.

The interface to SE Xoftspy is straightforward, though the buttons down the side of the screen are a little cramped and dated. We’d also rather see a more useful presentation, grouping potential threats together as in other packages, instead of listing each file separately – it makes the numbers look good, but the actual number of threats detected seemed no better than average, as did the removal performance. Based on several emails I've seen from readers, Winfixer is a nasty bit of adware. It tries to install itself through confusing and alarming popups, and is resistant to many removal tools. Here's what I recommend to remove Winfixer.

First, make sure your Windows system is up to date. If you don't have Windows Update running on auto-pilot, I highly recommend that. From Internet Explorer, click on Tools, then Windows Update. This will ensure that you have the latest Windows security fixes and patches. Without that in place, you are wide open to many different exploits that can wreak havoc on your PC.

If you search for Winfixer at Google, you will find quite a few links to websites, forums and software vendors that claim to have the solution for Winfixer removal. However, as you mentioned, many of them are very geeky and require you to mess around in the Windows system registry. If you are an advanced user and follow these instructions very carefully, you may succeed in getting rid of Winfixer.

But if getting into the guts of the operating system sounds a little scary, you might want to consider using a malware removal tool written specifically for the task. Effectiveness:
When tested, we found that XoftSpy missed quite a lot of spyware and adware. We also discovered XoftSpy often presented false positives. This means the program claimed an innocent program was spyware or adware. This is inconvenient, because if you remove these innocent programs as XoftSpy advices, you can cause serious harm to your computer. Conveniently XoftSpy SE provides a “view details” section that takes you directly to their dictionary and explains the source, nature and threat of it’s findings.

Ease of Setup/Installation:
XoftSpy was easy to download and install. The program takes only minutes to download and installation was quick also. Additionally, a scan of our entire computer only took a few moments.

Ease of Use:
We found XoftSpy intuitive and easy to use. A couple of minor complaints we have are that the program only includes an abort button, it does not include a stop or pause scan button (like most spyware programs have.)

Help/Support:

All About Xoftspy, Adware Killer

Many people describe adware as the lesser of the two evils compared to spyware. And for the most part, that is general true. However, many forms of adware are just as destructive as spyware, and can cause you a great deal of time and aggravation trying to get rid of it.

Like my article on spyware, I want to start off by defining exactly what spyware is. According to McAfee Inc., the leader in spyware and adware protection solutions:

Adware is software whose primary function is to make revenue through advertising that is targeted at the person using the computer on which the adware is installed. This revenue can be made by the vendor or partners of the vendor. This does not imply that any personal information is captured or transmitted as part of the software’s functioning, though that is often the case.

A better but much longer (and my personal favorite) definition of adware:

Adware, also known as an Adbot, can do a number of things from profile your online surfing and spending habits to popping up annoying ad windows as you surf. In some cases Adware has been bundled (i.e. peer-to-peer file swapping products) with other software without the user's knowledge or slipped in the fine print of a EULA (End User License Agreement). Not all Adware is bad, but often users are annoyed by adware's intrusive behavior. Keep in mind that by removing Adware sometimes the program it came bundled with for free may stop functioning. Some Adware, dubbed a "BackDoor Santa" may not perform any activity other then profile a user's surfing activity for study.

AdWare can be obnoxious in that it performs "drive-by downloads". Drive-by downloads are accomplished by providing a misleading dialogue box or other methods of stealth installation. Many times users have no idea they have installed the application. Often Adware makers make their application difficult to uninstall.

It is imperative to actually read this agreement before you install any software. No matter how tedious the EULA, you should be able to find out the intent BEFORE you install the software. If you have questions about the EULA- e-mail the company and ask them for clarification.

As you can see from these two definitions, adware is just as bad as spyware.

I offered five great tips previously on how to protect you from spyware. So here are five tips to protect your self from adware:

1. Buy a good, comprehensive software program that protects your computer. For this, I have to recommend the products that I use. I use McAfee Internet Security Suite and XoftSpy SE, which is a malware scanner. These products can stop spyware and adware dead in its tracks. If you already have adware or spyware on your computer, these products can find it and delete it for good.

2. There is no such thing as a free lunch. When you download freeware or shareware, chances are that you are downloading adware with it. Many programmers will offer a “free” trial of their software that you can use. However, adware is built into the “free” program to bombard you with advertisements for the “paid” version of the freeware that you are using.

3. Certain “types” of websites are notorious for adware. Those “types” of websites include: peer-to-peer sites, free games websites, and pornographic sites. If you frequent these type of website, make sure your computer is protected (see number 1 above).

4. Make sure that your web-browser security settings are configured correctly. This can prevent adware or other malicious software from automatically downloading on your computer.

5. Never, never, never click on pop-up ads. I know that some pop-up are irresistible. But they are irresistible for a reason. Pop-ups are meant to get your attention. But if in the pursuit of your attention, they get you to click on them, you may get more than you bargain for.

The best thing to do is stop pop-ups from showing up on your computer in the first place. Most web-browsers come with a respectable pop-up blocker. If your pop-up blocker is doing a poor job of blocking pop-ups, Yahoo and Google offer excellent programs that work well. They’re free and they come from a reputable source.

Protecting your computer has turned into a multibillion-dollar business. But, even the best spyware and adware protection is useless if you don’t take necessary precautions. Doing just a little bit of research and taking a few precautions can greatly reduce your risk of being exposed to spyware, adware, viruses, trojans and other so called malware.

One of the top rated adware/spyware programs of 2004. It has a simple layout that makes it easy to eliminate adware and spyware from your system. It also features the ability to schedule regular scans to detect adware or spyware before it can have any serious effects.

Choice Number Five: PCorian
This is another great choice although it has not been as widely used and distributed as NoAdware. It does an excellent job of adware/spyware removal and is easy to use.

How do you effectively fight adware and what adware removal software is best?

I recommend several techniques, used in tandem:

1) Use XoftSpy download anti-spyware software.
This is software that specifically targets the nastiest Adware and Spyware and removes it. There are a plethora of programs out there to choose from so I am actually going to make some recommendations.
One I have worked with both at home and in my job is Noadware. It is easy to use and works really well. It catches Adware and Spyware that some of the free ones I tried didn’t catch. There is also an adware and spyware remover that works well and is free to home users – Adaware . I use both XoftSpy download and Adaware and they work effectively when used in combination with anti-virus software. These need to be updated as well and the software prompts with you to update with both of these programs when you run them, so they are fairly low maintenance.

2) Have good anti-virus software and keep it updated.
Many people have anti-virus software, but not all of them keep it updated. You can set it up to auto-update if you leave your computer on all of the time, or you can update it manually. I manually update every Saturday. To do this you can double click on the icon for your software. It is usually located on the bottom right hand side of your desktop, across from the START button. If you are using XP you may have to click the little arrow down there to see the icon. McAfee’s is an “M” and Norton’s is a little yellow shield. When you double click the icon, the program will come up and there should be a button there to update.

So, keep the anti-virus software updated. This will help protect you from the newest threats.

3) Beware of the FREE stuff!
Everyone likes free stuff. Free screensavers, free games, free pictures and free music are all popular downloads from the web. Use caution when downloading these, however, because often these freebies are far from free. I just don’t download them anymore; I have been burned too many times. If you do choose to download them, be careful and read the screens CAREFULLY when you are downloading and/or installing these items. Sometimes you can actually agree to install adware on your computer without even realizing that you are clicking okay. If you are a mad clicker like I am, you will need to override this tendency when you are dealing with freeware and shareware. Don’t just click okay, okay, okay…often with these adware installs, the default answer is not the best one.

4) Turning off System Restore.
(WARNING: this step is not for everyone)

Often these programs will set themselves up in way that even if you uninstall them they will reinstall themselves. They use your System Restore feature. You can disable this feature to thwart the adware and keep it from reinstalling. There is a downside to this though. If you need this feature and you turn it off then the back-up of your system will not be there. I use software to back-up my system, so I keep System Restore turned off. If you have never used the System Restore feature and don’t think you ever will, you may want to turn it off. It is totally your call. To get to System Restore go to: START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM and then click on the SYSTEM RESTORE Tab. You can uncheck it to turn off system restore.

What's new in ParetoLogic XoftSpy Antispyware

I recently used XoftSpy 4.15 to scan my PC for malicious files. It found a Trojan horse named CWS Combo that Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, and Norton AntiVirus didn’t detect. Unfortunately, I have to pay for the full version of XoftSpy to remove the Trojan. Do you think this is legitimate or just a ploy from XoftSpy’s creators to get me to buy the full version?
The spyware problem has created a huge demand for antispyware, and some vendors looking to cash in on that demand don’t really care if they cause more problems than they solve. Eric L. The applications on his list sometimes use several names, are sometimes marketed using deceptive advertising, and sometimes return false positives to pressure users into buying them. XoftSpy was on list of rogue antispyware, but he removed it when its parent company, ParetoLogic, started taking measures to control aggressive marketing and released a new 4.0 version that reportedly fixed the problems XoftSpy had with reporting false positives.

CWS, or CoolWebSearch, is a well-known Trojan horse with several variants, and it seems possible that CWS Combo is one such variant. Unfortunately, the only information we could find about this Trojan comes from ParetoLogic, and most of the references we found online concerning CWS Combo are from XoftSpy users. How many of us tech fans have been asked by family and friends to troubleshoot, install, repair, or assist with computers, mobile devices, digital cameras, and more? It is a regular occurrence for me and a new product was just launched that makes my job a bit easier when it comes to cleaning off "dirty" computers that people do not fully protect. I'd like to add my two pennyworth to your recent article on XoftSpy serial. I have recently tried out the software and so far have been pleased ... I used to run Ad-Aware and Spybot regularly and I have SpywareBlaster running in the background on my machine, plus a firewall and AntiVirus software. I downloaded XoftSpy serial in an attempt to get rid of a persistent nasty worm (Dumaru-AM) which the other software failed to solve. I am pleased to say that XoftSpy serial worked well and picked up several other bugs ... This is not to say that the other programs are not good but they all work slightly differently ... [in conclusion] I shall be adding XoftSpy serial to my software defenses to keep the bad guys at bay. "

Noted. As I stated yesterday, I was not able to find any substantial information on the web (via Google) which indicated that XoftSpy was an effective Spyware Removal Tool; in fact, the majority of feedback I reviewed concerning XoftSpy was negative due to what appears to be unethical affiliate marketing practices of the product.

Albeit, XoftSpy serial may work to remove some bugs, Gazette Reader Raymond C. appears to have found the smoking gun which may put this case to rest. He writes:

XoftSpy SE spyware removal tool that looks like scam. I found the following strongly negative review Xoftspy SE:

Would you give your money to someone who you cannot find out about. There is no statements of who or how the reference file of adware is updated. And like any Pyramid scheme, the main push is to get affiliates to sell for you, so much of the ad hype is directed in that area instead of supporting the end user that buys the software.

Review: XOFTSPY SE Don't buy and here the reasons why

I have installed xoftspy and reviewed it. Here is my findings and what my thoughts are

1. PARETOLOGIC is the website the software is installed from. However, any business IMO that registers their site under Domains By Proxy in order to keep their true identity a secret is not a company I want to give money to.

2. The site is big on ad hype and getting affiliates to sell for them.

3. Domain names that are advertising the xoftpsy SE are the same that I was collecting about 3 weeks ago and then they were advertising the Spyhunter.

4. The sites below are all registered under Domains By Proxy so the real owners are not shown. The IP's show they are either one or more virutal servers that can have multiple domain names per 1 IP address.
