While the term implies that the software secretly monitors or collects data, it often plays a much more destructive and annoying role. While collecting your personal information without your knowledge is bad enough, Spyware can also lead to annoying advertising popping up randomly, your computer running slower, or even worse, Windows totally crashing. The worst thing about Spyware though is its popularity and infectious nature. In fact, it’s so widespread that statically it’s almost definite that you have Spyware currently installed on your PC, even without you knowing.

It is estimated that identity thieves using computer spyware have stolen over $24 billion US dollars of account information including credit card details in the United States alone.

Adware and Malware often gets installed bundled with software that users download and install onto their computer because it claims to speed up the computer or fix problems.

Spyware on your PC has usually been installed without permission of the user and may have been included in a program or even music or video you have downloaded at some time. Spyware generally sends reports of whats on your computer back to one or more third parties. Computer spyware can change your system settings, install keystroke logger programs, steal your passwords and personal information including your credit card details and deliver spam or ads. Spyware does not spread like a computer virus or worm. Instead, badware gets into your computer system through deception of the user or through exploitation of software vulnerabilities. Malware is potentially more dangerous than Adware because it can record your keystrokes, history, passwords, and other confidential information.

Many badware programs reveal themselves visibly by displaying advertisements. Some will simply display pop-up ads on a regular basis - for instance, one every several minutes, or one when the user opens a new browser window.

What is Computer Adware?

Adware is annoying computer scripts, software, or programs which deliver banners or other types of advertising to a users computer and often contains advertisements to make money for the people who wrote the program. Threatware is usually free software that is loaded onto a users computer, sometimes with the users permission, to perform some useful task (like automatically filling in forms or a internet explorer toolbar), in exchange for the ability to track the users web activity and show the user targeted contextual ads. Adware can also be defined as any software application or program in which advertising banners are displayed or Pop-up windows appear while the program is running.

Some symptoms of computer badware may include:

Slow computer performance when opening programs or saving files and random windows error messages.
Unwanted pop-up windows and/or new and unexpected toolbars in your browser window.
Browser homepage hijacked and/or repeated change in your browser's home page.

As the spyware threat has worsened lately a number of programs designed to remove or to block malware have emerged.

I have tried several different programs over the years and have had tremendous success at keeping our office computers free of adware and spyware by using XoftSpy. Not only is XoftSpy AS highly effective and easy to install it is one of the cheapest online today, but don't let the cheap price fool you as I found XoftSpy to be the most effective and signature-rich of several we've tried. It will work with Windows XP/98SE/ME/2000/SP2+/NT4 SP 6a.

XoftSpy Anti-spyware program will:

Remove malware and Prevent Future Intrusions
Stops badware from slowing and crashing your PC.
Protects your privacy and personal information.
Immunizes your computer against future infections.
Blocks homepage changes, pop ups, and unwanted redirects.
Defends your computer with real-time Active Protection.

Antispyware Trouble & Update Glitch

I recently used Paretologic XoftSpy Antispyware to scan my PC for malicious files. It found a Trojan horse named CWS Combo that Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, and Norton AntiVirus didn’t detect. Unfortunately, I have to pay for the full version of XoftSpy 4.15 to remove the Trojan. Do you think this is legitimate or just a ploy from XoftSpy’s creators to get me to buy the full version?

The spyware problem has created a huge demand for antispyware, and some vendors looking to cash in on that demand don’t really care if they cause more problems than they solve. Eric L. Hayes maintains a list of rogue antispyware at Spyware Warrior. The applications on his list sometimes use several names, are sometimes marketed using deceptive advertising, and sometimes return false positives to pressure users into buying them. XoftSpy was on Eric’s list of rogue antispyware, but he removed it when its parent company, ParetoLogic, started taking measures to control aggressive marketing and released a new version that reportedly fixed the problems XoftSpy Anti-spyware had with reporting false positives.

CWS, or CoolWebSearch, is a well-known Trojan horse with several variants, and it seems possible that CWS Combo is one such variant. Unfortunately, the only information we could find about this Trojan comes from ParetoLogic, and most of the references we found online concerning CWS Combo are from XoftSpy AS users.

A shield against spyware

Generally, there is a huge range of Anti-Spyware software available from the net. Many are even free, but are perhaps not as effective as the ones which come with a small price. However, as a consumer, you have the choice, and I suggest you do your research before going out and actually spending money on one.

Firstly, AdAware is a popular (and totally 100% free) product made by a Swedish company. This software is great, easy to use and is updated often. It removes most Spyware from your computer, although is limited to removing only Spyware and data mining objects from your PC.

If you’re looking for something more extensive, a good option may be XoftSpySE. This small and easy to use program removes Spyware from your PC while also putting a stop to pop-ups while browsing the net. XoftSpy AS also decreases the risk of identity theft by eliminating data mining software (this is very important if you do your banking online). But, as already mentioned, once again is not the only Anti-Spyware software out there, as there are many more products to choose from!

For example, another popular option you may want to consider is AdwareAlert, which is equally effective in terms of eliminating Spyware. This software has similar features to XoftSpySE, but with the advantage of slightly better and more extensive customer care and 24/7 technical support! This is extremely handy if you're a novice computer user, but even if you're not, it is reassuring to know that the support is there if you encounter any problems using the software.

What no antispyware can do

Recently, I upgraded my copy of Internet Explorer. No big deal, right? Well, I thought it was an upgrade. In actuality it turned out to be a product masking as an upgrade called Intelligent Explorer and when it downloaded to my machine, it started a nightmarish journey that taught me a wealth about what one wrong click can unleash on your computer.

I did some quick research via Google and found messages screaming for help in the BullGuard and Spywareinfo forum from people trying to get it off their machine. In this article, I am going to use Internet Explorer to point out the Internet Explorer plugin nightmare and what you'll need to do to protect yourself.

Intelligent Explorer is a toolbar that moves in and takes over your browser. It is extremely hard to get rid of, and beyond that, it's just plain annoying. Here's is just one sample of a person calling for help:

""Hey I'm having issues with something called Internet explorer toolbar - Intelligent explorer. I can't find a way to remove it from my comp and I really don't want to reinstall windows. I've used spybot, ad-ware, and cw shredder but nothing seems to work."

What makes Intelligent Explorer so destructive is that it allows other software add-ons to download to you computer. And, even more insulting to your intelligence is that in their license agreement it states that they have the right to do it.

"You grant to us the right, exercisable by us until you uninstall the Software or this agreement is otherwise terminated, to provide to you the Service of downloading and causing to be displayed advertising material on your computer, through "pop-up" or other display while you use your browser. You acknowledge and agree that installation of the Software may automatically modify toolbars and other settings of your browser. By installing the Software, you agree to such modifications."

You can go to http://www.ieplugin.com/terms.html to read the entire license agreement.

The company that pushes this parasitic software is an obfuscated firm incorporated in the tiny country of Belize outside of most jurisdictions and immune from legal actions.

The pop-ups generated by this plugin run the gamut from annoying to pornographic. It can create a new homepage, generate an endless loop of popup ads, reappear after removal and cause endless hours of frustration.

Thank God for Paretologic XoftSpy. After two scans, it finally got rid of it, and it only cost me $40. Freeware is available, but at the level of frustration I was at, I went for a guaranteed product. At least, if it didn't work, I could return it and get my money back. Other good eliminators include Spyware Eliminator, Spyware COP and Spybot Search and Destroy.

I have subsequently switched browsers, recognizing that Internet Explorer just has too many holes in its current security. Mozilla Firefox has become my browser of choice. It comes with superior security features and it's much easier to get rid of plug-ins that prove harassing. I have only gone over one plug-in problem I encountered when using IE. XoftSpy took care of others as well, but I got a much better browser and fewer problems when I made the switch to Mozilla Firefox.

Weed out spies from Windows installation

The term spyware covers a wide range of threats: nearly mainstream services that display ads, programs that co-opt search results, keyloggers that steal your passwords, even Trojan horses that open your system to hacking. But in two ways spyware is all the same - you didn't knowingly ask for it, and it uses your system's resources. Antispyware programs attempt to remove it or prevent it from installing in the first place. And spyware writers keep devising new tricks to avoid removal. Who's winning?

All currenttly present on the market antispyware applications can be configured to scan on schedule and download updated spyware definitions automatically. They all have the option to recover suspected spyware from quarantine, or to mark specific programs as trusted so they'll be immune to future scans. In addition to scanning the system and removing spyware, they all at least attempt to prevent it from installing in the first place. Many will alert you when a program makes a suspicious system change like hijacking your home page or configuring itself to launch at startup. And some include additional security features, such as scanning for vulnerabilities or wiping out cookies, browser history, and other surfing traces.

Quantifying spyware removal is tough, because the vendors don't use a standard set of names and don't even agree on which file and Registry traces represent which threat. Some even report the same traces as three or four distinct threats! Rather than relying on each product's count of removed spyware or traces, we installed a number of particularly nasty threats and tested the products against these specific items.

Effective spyware protection is just one element of a safe computing experience, and we'd very much like to see excellent antispyware as part of an excellent security suite. But for now, none of the suites has an antispyware module that protects well enough. So our recommendation is unchanged: Get a security suite, get a separate antispyware app, and keep them running and up to date.

When it comes to antispyware, the ability to clean those nasty programs out of your system is priority number one. Of course, if your software can prevent the spyware from ever making its way onto your PC, all the better. Paretologic XoftSpy Anti-spyware performed almost superb with regard to detecting and removing spyware.

The magic of spyware-free System

ParetoLogic XoftSpy Antispyware was designed to scan the user's complete computer system to detect spyware parasites and quarantine the infected files for immediate protection.
XoftSpy detects and perfectly removes over 100,000 harmful, dangerous and likely unwanted applications. But the fact is that 9 out of 10 computers are infected with something called spyware which allows companies and individuals to do just that.

Spyware is a huge infringement of your privacy, but did you also know that some of it is even more sinister, able to steal your credit card details and trash your valuable data?

So what is spyware … and why me?

Spyware is software which assists in gathering information about a person or organization without their knowledge.

You may have loaded spyware unwittingly, by installing freeware or shareware. Authors of these packages often supplement their income by agreeing to include spyware in their offerings. Or, you may have been targeted just as a result of browsing the web.

Either way, they’ve got you! Your private information is being used without your consent.

How can I tell if I’m being spied on?

These guys are clever. They can spy on you for months, even years, without your knowledge. Some spyware is very low key and you’d never know it’s there. But if you have started receiving ‘junk’ email from people or companies you have never heard of, or if annoying ‘pop ups’ appear when you are browsing the web then there is a fairly good chance that you have spyware on your computer.

And, who knows what other information they helping themselves to? Are you comfortable with the idea that people are watching what sites you visit on the web, looking through your documents and email, or logging your credit card details and selling this information on to other parties?

XoftSpy Antispyware Helps Managing Corporate Security Policy

XoftSpy Anti-spyware in business environment

Thanks to spammers, spyware purveyors, and others who seek to pilfer personal information for ID theft purposes, risking privacy is perhaps the biggest drawback to using the Internet today.
That customer wariness affects all businesses, not just online ones. If you gather information at all from your customers -- and what business can afford not to? -- you need to have an effective privacy policy in place.

Such a policy means more than just declaring that everything you know about both your customers and employees will forever remain under wraps. Here are seven guidelines to help you to develop a sound privacy policy, or possibly improve the one you have.

1. Know precisely where you are now. The first step in devising an effective and comprehensive privacy policy is reviewing what privacy parameters may already be in place. Check out what sort of data you collect, how it's gathered, where and how it's stored, and other elements pertaining to personal information. Do you use cookies, for example, for those who visit your Web site? Find out who in your company is gathering private information, and who all has access to it, says Mark Merkow, author of "The E-Privacy Imperative: Protect Your Customers' Internet Privacy and Ensure Your Company's Survival in the Electronic Age." "Who controls it and is it shared or disclosed to third parties in any way?"

2. Determine upfront what statutes may apply. What you put into your privacy policy may not be exclusively up to you. As the public's concern over privacy has grown, so have the number of formal government regulations dictating what elements certain privacy policies have to contain. For instance, US businesses which deal in health care, likely are required to comply with The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). Likewise, for those involved in financial matters, the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act may mandate certain financial privacy requirements.

"Given the growing concern about privacy, there are more and more statutory requirements that define what certain privacy policies have to have in them," says David Simon, founder and president of WeComply, a Mt. Kisco, N.Y., company that offers employee training on privacy issues.

3. Give your customer specifics on how you will use their information. Tackle those issues that you're not obligated to mention " but are in your best interest to raise. As Harold Krent, dean and professor at the Chicago-Kent College of Law puts it, "There's certain information that it's strategically important to relay." Although privacy policies will differ significantly from one business to the next, here's a brief checklist of issues you should take into consideration:

" Telling customers and clients as precisely as possible what sort of personal information you gather and why.

" Whether you require Social Security or SIN numbers and why.

" Why and how you will use information from events and programs, such as surveys, contests, special offers and referrals.

" How information collected is stored, both online and off.

" If, how and why the information is shared.

" Offering customers the choice of "opting out" of certain programs.

" Why and how you will use information specific to customers' activity on your companys Web site.

" How customers may access whatever personal data you may have about them.

4. Get an attorney or privacy specialist, if necessary, to draft or review your policy. Once you have a sense of what you want to include " and what you legally must include " in a privacy policy, start putting something on paper. You can try drawing up a privacy policy yourself " if you opt for this, it's prudent to have an attorney or an expert on privacy matters review it for potential holes. Likewise, you can hand off the task to a lawyer or privacy specialist. Additionally, don't forget the Internet for guidance on policy matters. For instance, TRUSTe and the Better Business Bureau offer useful guidelines of what sort of content you may wish to consider for your privacy policy.

5. Don't overlook employees in your privacy policy. For many of them, privacy policies are exclusive to clients and customers. But it may be just as critical to have written parameters on how you use personal information about your employees. Some companies choose to protect PC's with ParetoLogic XoftSpy Anti-spyware and build employee privacy parameters into the same document that covers customers. However, if the issues are distinct enough " for instance, pertaining to guidelines specified under HIPAA " it may be more prudent to have an employee-specific privacy policy. Get advice here from an attorney or privacy specialist.

6. Appoint an employee to oversee privacy on an ongoing basis. Privacy isn't an issue of fluttering relevance. It's here to stay. And that, in turn, mandates ongoing attention on your part. If yours is a relatively modestly staffed company, that may mean adding privacy to an employee's existing regimen of responsibilities. But, if resources allow it, consider a privacy point person " one whose job is exclusive to looking after privacy issues.

"A lot of companies now have chief privacy officers," notes Merkow. "But, no matter how you approach it, it's important to have someone looking after privacy matters using XoftSpy Antispyware application deployment and management."

7. Walk the talk. One final element to an effective privacy policy supersedes the paper on which it's written. If and when you have a privacy policy in place, move heaven and earth to make certain that you and any and all employees follow it to the letter. Again, an employee earmarked for privacy issues can make this task easier. But, even if it's a matter of holding weekly meetings to hammer home the importance of adhering to privacy policies, don't assume that a privacy statement breathes on its own.

"It's also important to remember that it's more than just a security application (ParetoLogic XoftSpy Anti-spyware) than an issue of legal compliance," says Simon. "Poor privacy practices can do serious harm to your reputation."

BlackBerry spyware defeated by XoftSpy Antispyware

Research in Motion's (RIM) BlackBerry which is popular with corporate users due to its secure management of mobile e-mail is vulnerable to 'legal' spyware that has been classified as a Trojan by several security vendors.

RIM's BlackBerry has won significant market share in the corporate sector due to a perception that it is impervious to security attacks.

But an updated version of the FlexiSPY application, considered a security threat by most IT security vendors, enables a remote attacker to tap into phone calls and e-mails sent to and from a Blackberry-enabled device.

"This is the first [Trojan] for a BlackBerry we have ever seen," said Patrik Runald, senior security specialist with ParetoLogic Anti-spyware.

Marketed as a spyware device for BlackBerry phones, the FlexiSPY application by Bangkok-based manufacturer Vervata is sold on the premise that it can "spill BlackBerry secrets."

Once physically installed on a mobile device, a remote user is given complete monitoring and access control.

This includes bugging voice calls, logging mobile e-mail messages and SMS, tracking the location of the user, or even remotely switching on the phone's microphone to bug a user regardless of whether they are on a call.

While FlexiSPY also works on Windows Mobile and Symbian-based devices, and is sold on the premise of catching a cheating spouse, 'disloyal' employee or for the monitoring children, there can be no doubt that a BlackBerry targeted version is aimed squarely at corporate espionage.

Its use in a boardroom, for example, could have catastrophic implications for any organisation.

The infection is reported to be detected by ParetoLogic XoftSpy Antispyware.

What ParetoLogic XoftSpy Searches for on the Net

Remember the good old days? Of course it won't hurt to have one, but there's little chance it may ever block a hacking attempt of infection threat. To be exposed to such vulnerabilities, you have to use Internet.
And most PC users do just that - surf, download, read email, visit forums, chat online, browse websites. They are vulnerable, and a good anti-spyware solution is a must.
If you ever shop online, do some transactions with your credit card, have sensitive data stored like business emails, passwords, ICQ logs, - than you definitely have to get an effective anti-spyware software program.
Why XoftSpy?

The answer can be as long as your surfing experience.
XoftSpy Anti-spyware in a nutshell is:

Fast and powerful scanning engine to indentify and remove spyware, adware, rootkits, keyloggers, etc.;

Automatic update of critical signature database to keep a PC safe against latest malware threats;

Advanced analysis of data to find potentially malicious programs;

Real-time protection monitoring all activity - operations with files;

User-friendly interface.

However, XoftSpy is NOT for every one. It suits best home users demanding a reliable, but silent protection working in the background. Once installed, XoftSpy anti-spyware does not need user's attention. It is very easy to configure (requires a couple of minutes) and then functions as a 'set it and forget it' applications. If a PC or laptop is used by children, elder people, other users lacking advanced knowledge in PC security theory, than XoftSpy Anti-spyware fits these requirements.
You can watch a short video which shows how to quickly configure XoftSpy Anti-spyware to provide your PC with reliable protection. Once done, you can have peace of mind and never worry about your sensitive private data (such as banking passwords, credit card numbers, postal address, etc).

xoftspy anti-spyware

XOFTSpy Antispyware Company Background

ParetoLogic XoftSpy Developer's Bio

ParetoLogic is an international software development company headquartered in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Developed by ParetoLogic, and besides scanning your computer for spyware it will also detect and remove adware, browser hijackers and trojans.

Internet is flooded with all sorts of malware. Spyware is considered by many experts to be the worst kind as it is designed to intercept or take partial control of your machine, without your consent and it practically invades your privacy. Spyware software falls into three categories: the so called badware, malicious and the popup ads launchers.

Spyware simply tracks the websites the user is visiting and then sends the information to an advertising agency (it is an easy way for advertisers to make their marketing research). The popup ads launchers simply annoy you with activating all types of banners on your screen. Malicious spyware is the worst because it can monitor the activity on your computer and send to a third party whatever you type on your keyboard (passwords, credit card numbers, etc.).

Using XoftSpy SE is a piece of cake as the interface is simple and every type of user can handle it. From newbies to more advanced computer users, this privacy protection tool will provide easy access to the functions and options.

The options are arranged vertically in the left side of the application window. The first button is the Start Scan. Pressing it will launch the scan of your computer. I advise using it after you have made the settings of the software.

In General Settings you have the chance to set up the software to launch the software at Windows startup with or without scanning your computer. Here you can also check for new versions of the software and you can customize the updating options: Check for Updates Automatically, Prompt before Downloading Database/Program Updates.

In Scan Settings you will have a nice surprise as you will find out that the software can be customized to scan for whatever you want of the following: browser hijackers, registry, active processes, host files, system folders, and folders. The user can select the folders
for the application to scan.

Next in line are the Backup and Ignore List buttons featured in XoftSpy SE. The names of the options say it all. The Scan results will display the files that the software has detected as being some sort of malware. Right-clicking them will open a context menu that allows the user to send files considered as non-threat to the ignore list.

You will be glad to learn that the software includes the scheduling feature. Thus you do not have to remember (or be reminded) all the time to scan your machine for malware. Schedule the task (weekly, monthly, once, at system startup, at logon or when the system is idle) and the start time. If you have scheduled the task weekly or monthly, you have to select the day of the week or month you want the scheduling to be performed.

At the time of the review the software provided protection against over 95,000 definitions. After the application has finished the scan, the user can access a usage report in order to see the time and date of the last scan, the number of items removed or the total number of scans and items in the ignore list.

The number of definitions XoftSpy SE stores in its database is impressive and the software is easy to use and arouses no problem.

The user can find out information about the scanned objects. Clicking this option will take you to the software's website and you will learn about the object's threat level and what it does.

The application does not include archive scanning or at least it does not display them when browsing for folders.

The buttons in the left side of the application window are too sandwiched in between, although the interface allows for a more airy arrangement.

You cannot remove the items in the trial version.

I know that the software was pretty controversial at the beginning, but the software is legit now. It found a total number of more than 100 malware on my computer from only two parasites and a number of cookies.

It seemed to me to have done a pretty good job with scanning, but I am a little suspicious about removing the objects found on my computer. Unfortunately, the trial version only scans the comp and it does not remove the malware. So it gives you a clear picture of how deeply your computer is infected, but to clean it you need to have a subscription license for XoftSpy SE.

XoftSpy compared to other antispyware solutions

In this article author tells about his experience with Xoftspy and other popular antispyware solutions available on the market.

Who would think I was capable of such revengeful thoughts about the parties responsible for inflicting my poor computer with spyware? Well, after the trauma of having gone through such an experience for the first time, I was sorely tempted by the occult section of curses and witchcraft at my local bookstore. Growl!

Basically, I am a normal person using a home computer to perform simple normal tasks such as word processing, writing emails, internet banking, and surfing the Internet for useful information. Ok, I also have a weakness for looking for bargains on good old eBay (sheepish grin) and Paypal is quite a handy option for easy purchasing.

Problem:

Great dismay and panic hit when my pc started popping up strange windows or messages. With my limited IT knowledge, I ran a Norton virus scan which obviously revealed a number of problems. But the Symantec removal tool did not remove the spyware and I could not even log onto a couple of password protected sites. My beloved pc was infected with some malware or adware or trojan, among which, I believe was WinFixer and a Trojan Vundo. I did not know how to get rid of Vundo or how to remove WinFixer. (Or perhaps they were the one and same thing?). But at that point, I did not know any better, so began the laborious task of searching for information on how to get rid of the spyware.

Research:

WinFixer, on the other hand, has siblings as it is identical to WinAntiVirus and ErrorSafe. And these programs all claim to repair problems within your computer system. By installing the program on your computer, you will likely end up receiving false information about your computer. Naturally, this will confuse you into believing your PC is infected with viruses, spyware and/or other forms of malware.

From my search, I found out that the Trojan Vundo is a trojan horse that causes popups advertising rogue antispyware programs. For example, the program called Sysprotect is advertised in many of the popup windows as seen from the screenshot below. Vundo infects a computer by creating a DLL file in the Windows system directory and writes registry entries causing Windows to inject the file into winlogon.exe.

The popups and forced downloads apparently mirror "marketing" strategies of many spyware programs. And at times, infected computers will reduce in their level of speed and performance. Well, this all explained what was probably happening to my pc, and I knew I had to figure out how to get rid of WinFixer and Vundo before they drove me mad.

Research and solution:
My initial Norton antivirus scan found but was not able to delete Vundo, even after rebooting. The Symantec removal tool did not help at all. I had disconnected from the Internet, disabled system restore, and ran the removal tool, regularly and in safe mode. After numerous startups, varying with safe mode, and disabling antivirus, I even tried to figure out how to remove Vundo manually without messing with the registry, etc. Please note that some people had success with the Symantec removal tools, and some others, like me, did not. Apart from the Trojan Vundo, I was getting quite frustrated at not being able to remove WinFixer for the many windows continually popping up started to slow my computer down, and even freeze it at times.
So I first tried Xoftspy, which was the fastest when scanning my computer. I was pleased to have fewer pop ups, was able to remove WinFixer, and ended with a much faster internet connection.

Then with my next program, Spy Sweeper, I ran it twice and then did a full system scan. Lo and behold, Vundo was gone, no more popups and adware annoyances. I guess this might not work for everyone but it is worth a shot to download Spy Sweeper.

Being still paranoid about the health of my pc, I finally ran the the free two-week trial version of CounterSpy, for extra assurance. Now I was quite impressed as it also included a scheduler, secure file shredder, and a history cleaner that made it simple to set up weekly scans. And there are frequent definition file updates for CounterSpy's publisher. The company seems to run a well-staffed spyware research department. After a scan, CounterSpy can delete, quarantine, or remove spyware. I was advised not to install Microsoft AntiSpyware alongside older versions of CounterSpy (version 1.5 and below). And it is recommended to get CounterSpy to check for online updates of definitions and program files manually.

In my initial panic, I reacted by downloading some recommended antispyware programs, namely CounterSpy by Sunbelt Software, XoftSpy by ParetoLogic and Spy Sweeper by Webroot Software Inc. I came to my senses by the third program and stopped myself from paying for another popular program, Spyware Doctor. But hey, all these programs did receive pretty good reviews from the experts at PCWorld, PCMag, CNet, Tucows and AdwareReport. So at the time, I did not feel that I had gone too much overboard ;)

Now, there are many sites listing all sorts of free and paid antispyware programs with a variety of reviews and user opinions on how to remove WinFixer and how to get rid of Vundo. Many of the commercial antispyware program homepages also list very detailed features of their products plus the latest research findings about current spyware threats.

Anyway, an opinion and recommendation I had read when researching for the reliable antispyware programs made heaps sense in that software you pay for is more likely to offer benefits over freeware, i.e., better support, more frequent updates and better pro-active protection measures. One just has to be careful when selecting the programs. According to the comments in the forums and review articles I had read, many recommend using at least two programs to be able to catch the latest spyware that either program might miss (that was when I stopped myself from my downloading frenzy). I have learnt much more about my pc now and wish to share and perhaps amuse you my muddled but finally effective measures to cleaning up my pc and removing the spyware.

Conclusion:

To sum it all, XoftSpy was able to delete WinFixer as the program was able to uninstall WinFixer within fifteen minutes requiring a couple of restarts. As for Spy Sweeper, it managed to remove Vundo with ease. And I have no doubt that CounterSpy has done a great job of keeping my pc free of spyware. I cannot say that I have taken the best approach to solving my problems, but my pc is now running faster than ever and I have been free of WinFixer and Vundo ever since. I just have to remember to be more careful and scan my pc regularly.

One thing is for sure, there are many reliable and popular antispyware programs out there, and many helpful forum chat folk who can lend a hand with plenty of technical advice. You just have to sort out what advice and which steps to take by increasing your own awareness and understanding of your pc and the nasty world of spyware lurking around these days.

Is XoftSpy a rogue software?

I was wating time at the dinner at my in-laws' house in Virginia, last day, in part so I could get a head start on the traffic heading up to Austin for the ISPCON keynote I inspected this evening. After I sat down at my father-in-law's PCto check my favorite websites, a program called XoftSpy SE interrupted what I was doing to tell me it had detected a new spyware threat on the machine.

My father-in-law said that a few days earlier he'd received a pop-up alert that a whole bunch of nasty spyware programs were lurking on his computer, and that XoftSpy SE was just the trick to clean up his machine.

Now, I had never heard of this company or its products until yesterday, so I immediately began manually searching for the file the program identified as spyware. But after searching for a while, I could not find the targeted file anywhere on the PC. Alarm bells started going off in my head, and I began to get the feeling that my father-in-law might have fallen for an aggressive marketing pitch for an anti-spyware application he may not have needed in the first place. I say "may not have needed" because I checked the logs of his automated, weekly Ad-Aware and SpyBot Search & Destroy scans, which turned up nothing of interest over the past two months.

Now, my father-in-law is a pretty sharp guy, but he often needs a little guidance in the computer security department, and as such I suspect he's not alone among other adult baby-boomers trying to work their way through the computer age. So allow me to highlight a few excellent resources for finding and using trusted anti-spyware software.

First of all, some of the best anti-spyware tools out there today are free. We review at least four of them in the video tutorials on computer security that we published recently.

If you or someone you know is intent on purchasing anti-spyware programs, I would highly recommend paying a visit to this comprehensive guide to spyware programs at SW. This site is an excellent catalog of anti-spyware vendors, noting which ones are using questionable marketing tactics. SW also has a separate page that lists known, trustworthy anti-spyware programs.

My point is not to bash companies like free XoftSpy download, but to help our readers make informed choices about a very serious and necessary layer of computer security protection for any Windows-based PC connected to the Internet.

For what it's worth, here's what SW had to say about XoftSpy:

"Over the past few months, XoftSpy has taken aggressive steps to reign in its affiliates (who were primarily responsible for the unsavory advertising), revised its license text, and released a new version of XoftSpy download (version SE) that addresses our concerns with false positives. Given these changes we can no longer regard XoftSpy SE as 'rogue/suspect' anti-spyware."

Download Xoftspy to Protect Your Online Privacy

The World Wide Web is a good thing - tons of information (often even useful) at just a few clicks and key-strokes away. And when you find that there are 1,500 things on your PC, you certainly feel like reaching for the credit card so you can pay to remove them.

Scanning is very quick and the 1,500 items found included every cookie and file that every piece of spyware installs on your PC. After rebooting, we were assured there were only seven left to remove, which were duly killed by another scan and clean, and our home page was reset to the value we’d entered into SE Xoftspy. However, we still had unwanted pop-ups affecting our browsing.

The interface to SE Xoftspy is straightforward, though the buttons down the side of the screen are a little cramped and dated. We’d also rather see a more useful presentation, grouping potential threats together as in other packages, instead of listing each file separately – it makes the numbers look good, but the actual number of threats detected seemed no better than average, as did the removal performance. We’d like to have seen more details about the things found, but when you have 1,500 of them, it can be quite difficult to be specific

FREE XoftSpy download wins over Malware

If you own a computer and work with a computer, I am sure you must have experienced computer problems such as computer freezing, computer crashes, internet explorer problems, browser hijacking, key logger problems and others.
In the war against spywares, adwares and malwares, it is gratifying to finally find software that does the job effectively and help you protect your computer and privacy.

Most of these problems are caused by viruses, worms, adwares, spywares and malwares that stealthily get installed on your computer and thereafter begin to cause havoc.

This is not the only problem. When you buy some anti-spyware, or anti-adware or anti-malware to remove these spyware adwares, again, you may not be aware that they are indeed adwares, spywares and malwares themselves!

If you download music, softwares, movies and free softwares on the internet often, or exchange files or open attached files from others, you’re an easy victim to these malicious cookies, viruses, parasites, spywares and adwares.

Therefore, it is very gratifying to finally find software that actually does the job of cleaning your computer system and removing the most malicious and harmful adware spywares. The software is named Xoftspy SE.

The company who distributes Xoftspy claims it is the latest and most advanced spyware detection and removal application on the Internet.

It will prevent anyone from "spying" on your Internet activities.

You can use their free scanner to find out if your PC is infected with spyware, W32/Spybot, browser hijackers, adware, malware and key loggers.

Spyware is the most common threat to online computer safety, security and your privacy.

Spyware adwares allow most companies to track your surfing patterns and internet behavior and record your credit card and other personal information without your permission, which they sell and make a lot of money from.

Spyware adwares can take control of your browser and alter your computer system files and use them for many purposes.

They can be used to do bulk e-mailing spamming other people. They can be used to login to porn sites etc. (You get the picture.)

These computer parasites slow down your internet connection by flooding you with unwanted spyware pop-up ads and junks.

Most adware spyware cannot be detected by anti-virus and firewall software.

It is estimated that 9 out of 10 computers are infected by adware spyware, worms, viruses and malwares.

This is why free Xoftspy download anti-spyware fighteris a very useful and important software because it zaps these parasites before they do any damage to your computer.

Anyone who surfs the Internet or shares their computer with others
or shares files such as music and pictures with other individuals will benefit from Xoftspy anti-spyware, anti-malware, and anti-adware spyware cleaner.

FREE Xoftspy download anti-spyware, anti-malware, anti-adware spyware cleaner can protect your security and privacy by performing a complete scan of your computer system to detect spyware parasites, quarantine infected files for immediate protection and review and remove all forms of spyware adwares, viruses, worms and malwares.

It also has regular updates on new Spyware threats.

Here is a testimonial from a customer who has benefited from free Xoftspy download:

"Hey Guys, I performed a free scan on my machine and, not only was your scan much faster than the two competitive products that I regularly use (make that 'used'), but it found 47 objects of significant threat that the others failed to detect. My machine is configured with 512mbs of RAM of which over 250mbs was being used prior to the scan.

After purchasing your software (great price btw), not only did my machine finally lose some deeply embedded malware problems, but my memory usage dropped 80mbs my standard SOHO machine now runs faster and cleaner than ever before!

Despite firewall protection, anti-virus, two spy ware real-time prevention cleaners, and diligent permission administration I was still getting whacked over the wire with all sorts of threats. Since using your product, I have de-installed those competitive solutions and am now operating much cleaner and faster.

Thanks for the great software and thanks for helping out my small business, my customers appreciate it! My popup blocker is set to High. I have Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, XoftSpy SE and even Microsoft AntiSpyware. But no matter what I try they keep coming back. I’ve searched for help on removing Winfixer, but all the info I found is too technical for me. Can you help?"

Based on several emails I've seen from readers, Winfixer is a nasty bit of adware. It tries to install itself through confusing and alarming popups, and is resistant to many removal tools. Here's what I recommend to remove Winfixer.

First, make sure your Windows system is up to date. If you don't have Windows Update running on auto-pilot, I highly recommend that. From Internet Explorer, click on Tools, then Windows Update. This will ensure that you have the latest Windows security fixes and patches. Without that in place, you are wide open to many different exploits that can wreak havoc on your PC.

If you search for Winfixer at Google, you will find quite a few links to websites, forums and software vendors that claim to have the solution for Winfixer removal. However, as you mentioned, many of them are very geeky and require you to mess around in the Windows system registry. If you are an advanced user and follow these instructions very carefully, you may succeed in getting rid of Winfixer.

But if getting into the guts of the operating system sounds a little scary, you might want to consider using a malware removal tool written specifically for the task. Unfortunately, none of the free adware/Spyware tools seem to be effective in removing Winfixer. Several people have told me they have tried Ad-Aware, Spyware Blaster, Spyware Doctor, Spybot Search & Destroy, Microsoft AntiSpyware and others to no avail. In some cases, the program claims to have removed Winfixer, but it reappears after a reboot.

Two software packages from reputable companies claim to remove Winfixer and other malware, namely ParetoLogic XoftSpy SE and Computer Associates PestPatrol. They're not free, but they should get the job done with a friendly point and click user interface.

Xoftspy SE by ParetoLogic Effectiveness Tested

Summary:
XoftSpy by ParetoLogic is fairly powerful, easy-to-use software, but its poor detection abilities coupled with an unflattering number of false positives lowered its overall ranking.

Effectiveness:
When tested, we found that XoftSpy missed quite a lot of spyware and adware. We also discovered XoftSpy often presented false positives. This is inconvenient, because if you remove these innocent programs as XoftSpy advices, you can cause serious harm to your computer. Conveniently XoftSpy SE provides a “view details” section that takes you directly to their dictionary and explains the source, nature and threat of it’s findings.

Ease of Setup/Installation:
XoftSpy was easy to download and install. The program takes only minutes to download and installation was quick also. Additionally, a scan of our entire computer only took a few moments.

Ease of Use:
We found XoftSpy intuitive and easy to use. A couple of minor complaints we have are that the program only includes an abort button, it does not include a stop or pause scan button (like most spyware programs have.)

Help/Support:
ParetoLogic provides basic support for XoftSpy, including email support and a FAQs page. The help section is web-based, so you must be connected to the Internet in order to use it, which is inconvenient.

Customization:
XoftSpy's customization features are similar to those in many of our higher-ranked products; these options give you power to choose what you'd like to scan, and then schedule those scans whenever you want.

Xoftspy SE among other Spyware Removal Tools

Spyware is any type of program that installs itself on a computer without the knowledge of the user and uses the Internet connection without the permission of the user. Removing spyware using spyware removal programs such as Ad-ware and Spybot can solve this problem. These spyware removal tools can only be effective if their definition files are properly updated. This is because uninstalling the program attached to the spyware may not remove it.

Some of the other common programs that are similar to spyware are datamining, aggressive advertising, parasites, scumware, key loggers, selected Trojans, dialers, malware, Browser hijackers, and tracking components. Many P2P clients such as Bearshare, LimeWire, Kazaa and Grokster are common sources of acquiring spyware.

There are two types of spyware removal tools. The first one prevents the spyware from entering the system and the other focuses on detecting and eliminating the spyware. Usually, detection and removal of a spyware is much simpler compared to prevention. These anti-spyware programs detect and remove the spyware by scanning all the program files and directory systems in the computer.

Thus, a frequently updated database is required for this anti-spyware software to work efficiently. The main reason for this is that newer versions of spyware are regularly released. Some other spyware programs work in pairs and resist the anti-spyware program. It is possible that one spyware program replaces the one eliminated by the anti-spyware program thus bringing the user back to "square-one."

The market is also flooded with fake anti-spyware programs that are marketed as anti-virus removal programs. The buyer should be aware of such programs and shun their use since they may compound the problem by installing their own spyware in the computer.

Some of the popular and effective anti- spyware programs are Microsoft beta (now Windows defender), Webroot Spy Sweeper, PC Tools' Spyware Doctor, ParetoLogic's XoftSpy SE, and Sunbelt's Counterspy, which uses a forked codebase from the GIANT Anti-Spyware product.

XoftSpy SE by ParetoLogic

XoftSpy SE is a proprietary tool designed to scan and remove a number of computer threats for Microsoft Windows systems including: spyware, adware, spybots, Trojan horse threats, malware, keyloggers, pop-up generators, and browser hijackers. [1] Scanning includes examination of running processes, registry entries, files, and folders. There is the option to restore your system using back-up files. While there is free scanning for spyware threats, the full featured product is not free.

The makers of XoftSpy SE, ParetoLogic Inc. boast having one of the largest databases in the industry. As of April 2007, the database offered support for over 230,000 definition malware items. Both XoftSpy SE Anti-Spyware applications utilize the same database. When new spyware definitions are added to the database, an automatic update occurs. This is crucial as new malware threats are constantly being released and easily picked up by simply viewing Internet sites in what is referred to as a “drive-by download”.

XoftSpySE, does not include the real-time blocking and enhanced removal technology of its more recent predecessor. Despite this, there are many users that consider this application a powerful and easy tool to combat malicious software issues that plague Windows computers. In an objective comparisons by Spyware Removers involving the comparison of several top spyware and adware removal tools, XoftSpy SE was given highest honors as it: “detects the widest variety of threats…” and “has a very high satisfaction rate.”

Prior to 2004, XoftSpy SE was considered rogue software by Spyware Warrior for reasons that included substandard advertising by affiliate channels and the fact that there was an unlawful clone of the program called SpyBurn. Spyware Warrior cleared this charge as “XoftSpy SE has taken aggressive steps to reign in its affiliates (who were primarily responsible for the unsavory advertising) revised its license text, and released a new version of XoftSpy SE…” Furthermore, ParetoLogic takes an active stance in identifying and removing items that have been installed by rogue software vendors that make fraudulent claims in order to lure and entice users that are looking to rid their computers of malicious software.

XoftSpy Review - Eradicate Spyware

Completely eradicate spyware with XoftSpy SE and stop worrying about sneaky lurkers spying on your every move. Then you might want to take the next step in having a full fledged engine working on your files, folders, memory and review every other part of your computer you don't even know.

Weekly updates refresh your database so you'll always have the latest weapons in the industry and leave you without an excuse for protection. If that wasn't enough definition updates are always free and you can count on backup and restore features that will double-guard you against those scary threats. By removing any malware or malignant software that infects your computer, XoftSpy SE actually makes your computer faster by freeing up resources that these digital parasites take!

XoftSpy SE boasts to own a massive database that competes as one of the largest on the net. And for the most part, that is general true. However, many forms of adware are just as destructive as spyware, and can cause you a great deal of time and aggravation trying to get rid of it.

Like my article on spyware, I want to start off by defining exactly what spyware is. According to McAfee Inc., the leader in spyware and adware protection solutions:

Adware is software whose primary function is to make revenue through advertising that is targeted at the person using the computer on which the adware is installed. This revenue can be made by the vendor or partners of the vendor. This does not imply that any personal information is captured or transmitted as part of the software’s functioning, though that is often the case.

A better but much longer (and my personal favorite) definition of adware:

Adware, also known as an Adbot, can do a number of things from profile your online surfing and spending habits to popping up annoying ad windows as you surf. In some cases Adware has been bundled (i.e. peer-to-peer file swapping products) with other software without the user's knowledge or slipped in the fine print of a EULA (End User License Agreement). Not all Adware is bad, but often users are annoyed by adware's intrusive behavior. Keep in mind that by removing Adware sometimes the program it came bundled with for free may stop functioning. Some Adware, dubbed a "BackDoor Santa" may not perform any activity other then profile a user's surfing activity for study.

AdWare can be obnoxious in that it performs "drive-by downloads". Drive-by downloads are accomplished by providing a misleading dialogue box or other methods of stealth installation. Many times users have no idea they have installed the application. Often Adware makers make their application difficult to uninstall.

It is imperative to actually read this agreement before you install any software. No matter how tedious the EULA, you should be able to find out the intent BEFORE you install the software. If you have questions about the EULA- e-mail the company and ask them for clarification.

As you can see from these two definitions, adware is just as bad as spyware.

I offered five great tips previously on how to protect you from spyware. So here are five tips to protect your self from adware:

1. Buy a good, comprehensive software program that protects your computer. For this, I have to recommend the products that I use. I use McAfee Internet Security Suite and XoftSpy SE, which is a malware scanner. These products can stop spyware and adware dead in its tracks. If you already have adware or spyware on your computer, these products can find it and delete it for good.

2. There is no such thing as a free lunch. When you download freeware or shareware, chances are that you are downloading adware with it. Many programmers will offer a “free” trial of their software that you can use. However, adware is built into the “free” program to bombard you with advertisements for the “paid” version of the freeware that you are using.

3. Certain “types” of websites are notorious for adware. Those “types” of websites include: peer-to-peer sites, free games websites, and pornographic sites. If you frequent these type of website, make sure your computer is protected (see number 1 above).

4. Make sure that your web-browser security settings are configured correctly. This can prevent adware or other malicious software from automatically downloading on your computer.

5. Never, never, never click on pop-up ads. I know that some pop-up are irresistible. But they are irresistible for a reason. Pop-ups are meant to get your attention. But if in the pursuit of your attention, they get you to click on them, you may get more than you bargain for.

The best thing to do is stop pop-ups from showing up on your computer in the first place. Most web-browsers come with a respectable pop-up blocker. If your pop-up blocker is doing a poor job of blocking pop-ups, Yahoo and Google offer excellent programs that work well. They’re free and they come from a reputable source.

Protecting your computer has turned into a multibillion-dollar business. But, even the best spyware and adware protection is useless if you don’t take necessary precautions. Doing just a little bit of research and taking a few precautions can greatly reduce your risk of being exposed to spyware, adware, viruses, trojans and other so called malware.

Antispyware removers review

What is Adware or Sypware?
These are small files that are created by publishers to track your activity on the internet. They can record where you go, your purchases, send those extremely annoying popup ads and even get your credit card number. They are also known as "malware." These can be put on your harddrive even while you don't know it (so-called "drive by" download).
Is your computer running slow or do you have annoying popups?
If your computer is running slow and / or you get a lot of annoying popups, chances are your computer is infected. In this age of the internet it would be unusual if you weren't infected. These programs slow down your computer and slow your surfing activities because they are "recording" all of your movements on the internet.

Adware and Spyware have recently become the number one threat to your computer, online privacy and performance of your computer. CNN has estimated that over 90% of all computers that are on the internet are infected with these viruses. These go by various names including trojans, web bugs, advertiser software and monitoring software.

What you can do?
Fortunately today, there are some good adware/spyware removal programs. We have surveyed the current literature in addition to our own experience and have the following recommendations. It is a good idea to use one of the programs that has been used a lot by others and therefore has been adequately "tested." One final caveat ... while it is free to scan your computer for adware and spyware, there is a charge for the software that removes it.
Choice Number One: NoAdware
NoAdware has been the "Industry Standard" for the year 2005. It has the highest rating of any of the adware/spyware removal tools. It is very easy to use and will remove a wide spectrum of adware and spyware from your system. To download a free scan of your system click on the link below:

Visit NoAdware and Scan Your PC for Free!

Choice Number Two: Xoftspy
Coming in at number two is Xoftspy SE. This is an excellent adware/spyware removal program and it may even remove a few more types of spyware than our number one choice. It is however, somewhat less user friendly and requires a little more work to optimize its capability. It also includes a free scan.

Download XoftSpy and Scan Your PC for Free!

Choice Number Three: Alert Spy
Alert Spy is another good choice and a very reliable program. It does a great job of eliminating adware and spyware parasites from your computer and is very easy to use. The beginner option actually allows you to click and forget.

Choice Number Four: Spyware Nuker
One of the top rated adware/spyware programs of 2004. It has a simple layout that makes it easy to eliminate adware and spyware from your system. It also features the ability to schedule regular scans to detect adware or spyware before it can have any serious effects.

Choice Number Five: PCorian
This is another great choice although it has not been as widely used and distributed as NoAdware. It does an excellent job of adware/spyware removal and is easy to use.

Use Xoftspy Download Adware Spyware Removal and Prevention

How do you effectively fight adware and what adware removal software is best?

I recommend several techniques, used in tandem:

1) Use XoftSpy download anti-spyware software.
This is software that specifically targets the nastiest Adware and Spyware and removes it. There are a plethora of programs out there to choose from so I am actually going to make some recommendations.
One I have worked with both at home and in my job is Noadware. It is easy to use and works really well. It catches Adware and Spyware that some of the free ones I tried didn’t catch. To check it out and get a free scan of your computer you can click here . Another program I have used and highly recommend is XoftSpy.
There is also an adware and spyware remover that works well and is free to home users – Adaware . I use both XoftSpy download and Adaware and they work effectively when used in combination with anti-virus software. These need to be updated as well and the software prompts with you to update with both of these programs when you run them, so they are fairly low maintenance.

2) Have good anti-virus software and keep it updated.
Many people have anti-virus software, but not all of them keep it updated. You can set it up to auto-update if you leave your computer on all of the time, or you can update it manually. I manually update every Saturday. To do this you can double click on the icon for your software. It is usually located on the bottom right hand side of your desktop, across from the START button. If you are using XP you may have to click the little arrow down there to see the icon. McAfee’s is an “M” and Norton’s is a little yellow shield. When you double click the icon, the program will come up and there should be a button there to update.

So, keep the anti-virus software updated. This will help protect you from the newest threats.

3) Beware of the FREE stuff!
Everyone likes free stuff. Free screensavers, free games, free pictures and free music are all popular downloads from the web. Use caution when downloading these, however, because often these freebies are far from free. I just don’t download them anymore; I have been burned too many times. If you do choose to download them, be careful and read the screens CAREFULLY when you are downloading and/or installing these items. Sometimes you can actually agree to install adware on your computer without even realizing that you are clicking okay. If you are a mad clicker like I am, you will need to override this tendency when you are dealing with freeware and shareware. Don’t just click okay, okay, okay…often with these adware installs, the default answer is not the best one.

4) Turning off System Restore.
(WARNING: this step is not for everyone)

Often these programs will set themselves up in way that even if you uninstall them they will reinstall themselves. They use your System Restore feature. You can disable this feature to thwart the adware and keep it from reinstalling. There is a downside to this though. If you need this feature and you turn it off then the back-up of your system will not be there. I use software to back-up my system, so I keep System Restore turned off. If you have never used the System Restore feature and don’t think you ever will, you may want to turn it off. It is totally your call. To get to System Restore go to: START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM and then click on the SYSTEM RESTORE Tab. You can uncheck it to turn off system restore.
XoftSpy SE will take care of your privacy.

What's new in ParetoLogic XoftSpy Antispyware

I recently used XoftSpy 4.15 to scan my PC for malicious files. It found a Trojan horse named CWS Combo that Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, and Norton AntiVirus didn’t detect. Unfortunately, I have to pay for the full version of XoftSpy to remove the Trojan. Do you think this is legitimate or just a ploy from XoftSpy’s creators to get me to buy the full version?
The spyware problem has created a huge demand for antispyware, and some vendors looking to cash in on that demand don’t really care if they cause more problems than they solve. Eric L. The applications on his list sometimes use several names, are sometimes marketed using deceptive advertising, and sometimes return false positives to pressure users into buying them. XoftSpy was on list of rogue antispyware, but he removed it when its parent company, ParetoLogic, started taking measures to control aggressive marketing and released a new 4.0 version that reportedly fixed the problems XoftSpy had with reporting false positives.

CWS, or CoolWebSearch, is a well-known Trojan horse with several variants, and it seems possible that CWS Combo is one such variant. Unfortunately, the only information we could find about this Trojan comes from ParetoLogic, and most of the references we found online concerning CWS Combo are from XoftSpy users. Plus, ParetoLogic provides only limited info and never explains what CWS Combo does, despite listing it as a High Threat. It is a regular occurrence for me and a new product was just launched that makes my job a bit easier when it comes to cleaning off "dirty" computers that people do not fully protect. I have been using a SanDisk Cruzer Titanium U3 USB flash drive and this new product runs right off the USB flash drive since it is a U3 portable application.
ParetoLogic launched XOFTspy Portable Anti-spyware for U3 platform USB drives. So I can now take along my Cruzer, pop it into a USB port and scan and clean PCs I am working on with a couple simple clicks. The great thing is that you can buy one license for US$14.95 and run the scan on multiple PCs as long as your U3 compatible drive is inserted into a USB port. XOFTspy Portable Anti-spyware frees the computer of spyware, trojans, keyloggers, and adware. This application also protects the USB flash drive so it is a good product to have for employees who carry USB flash drives back and forth from home to work.
After you insert your USB flash drive with the application loaded you simply click on the U3 launcher to start XOFTspy Portable. You can then just click the Scan button or you can first go in and change the settings (locations to scan, protection options, and automatic update option). When XOFTspy Portable finds something and you select to remove it from the computer you also have the option to create a backup of those files with the option to restore later if you desire. I have used this on 3 computers so far and it is a much better solution for me rather than trying to get anti-spyware downloaded and installed on each computer I am troubleshooting and cleaning.

ParetoLogic XoftSpy Download

ParetoLogic's XoftSpy download, expected this September, will use seven distinct layers of defense to remove spyware and keep it out of your system. Its TrulyBlock module will block spyware in real time and its BlockList will keep you from accidentally surfing to a spyware-infested site. Its "Zheng" technology crawls the Web seeking to identify new spyware before it can do any harm. I have recently tried out the software and so far have been pleased ... I used to run Ad-Aware and Spybot regularly and I have SpywareBlaster running in the background on my machine, plus a firewall and AntiVirus software. I downloaded XoftSpy serial in an attempt to get rid of a persistent nasty worm (Dumaru-AM) which the other software failed to solve. I am pleased to say that XoftSpy serial worked well and picked up several other bugs ... This is not to say that the other programs are not good but they all work slightly differently ... [in conclusion] I shall be adding XoftSpy serial to my software defenses to keep the bad guys at bay. "

Noted. As I stated yesterday, I was not able to find any substantial information on the web (via Google) which indicated that XoftSpy was an effective Spyware Removal Tool; in fact, the majority of feedback I reviewed concerning XoftSpy was negative due to what appears to be unethical affiliate marketing practices of the product.

Albeit, XoftSpy serial may work to remove some bugs, Gazette Reader Raymond C. appears to have found the smoking gun which may put this case to rest. He writes:

Oddly enough, I just finished reviewing an in-depth review from PC World, entitled 'Poor Defenders' posted on the exact same day as your article concerning XoftSpy (November 4th, 2004). At the top of page 4, the title reads 'Disappointing Anti-Spyware Tools (chart) Commercial products promoted in spam and pop-up ads work less well than quality freeware.' It appears that XoftSpy serial made the list due to the fact that it 'removes files but leaves many registry keys behind [and] exaggerates the risk of tracking cookies.'

XoftSpy SE bottom line

XoftSpy SE spyware removal tool that looks like scam. I found the following strongly negative review Xoftspy SE:

Would you give your money to someone who you cannot find out about. There is no statements of who or how the reference file of adware is updated. And like any Pyramid scheme, the main push is to get affiliates to sell for you, so much of the ad hype is directed in that area instead of supporting the end user that buys the software.

Review: XOFTSPY SE Don't buy and here the reasons why

I have installed xoftspy and reviewed it. Here is my findings and what my thoughts are

1. PARETOLOGIC is the website the software is installed from. However, any business IMO that registers their site under Domains By Proxy in order to keep their true identity a secret is not a company I want to give money to.

2. The site is big on ad hype and getting affiliates to sell for them.

3. Domain names that are advertising the xoftpsy SE are the same that I was collecting about 3 weeks ago and then they were advertising the Spyhunter.

4. The sites below are all registered under Domains By Proxy so the real owners are not shown. The IP's show they are either one or more virutal servers that can have multiple domain names per 1 IP address.
